Hormone Replacement Therapy

What is testosterone?

Testosterone, a hormone primarily synthesized in the testicles, plays a crucial role in maintaining various aspects of men's health, including:

- Bone density
- Fat distribution
- Muscle strength and size
- Development of facial and body hair
- Production of red blood cells
- Sex drive
- Sperm production

How do testosterone levels change with age?

Testosterone levels typically peak during adolescence and early adulthood, gradually declining as individuals age, usually at a rate of around 1% per year after reaching 30 or 40 years old. For older men, it's essential to ascertain whether low testosterone levels stem from natural aging or from a condition like hypogonadism, which interferes with normal testosterone production. Testosterone replacement therapy, administered through injections, pellets, patches, or gels, can alleviate the symptoms of low testosterone in individuals affected by hypogonadism.
